Player Movement

I have now begun the proper development of Northern Silence and have already made some progress, though in general it is a bit slower than I would have liked. In the first week of development, there was a major focus on player movement and getting some basic art assets. Lets start with the art assets:

So far for the art assets, I have got some tile-sets that could be used to match the general style that i am going for, as well as some character pixel-art models that currently are set for 4-way movement. The tile-sets gathered were gained from online sources as I am not an experienced graphic designer, even with something like pixel art. Unfortunately for me however, there were not many that matched what i wanted to go for with this project, so the selection was quite limited. This will likely mean that i will be developing my own throughout the development and slowly replacing many of the current assets that I have. Some of the assets however, are likely to be used in some capacity, especially more decorative background assets, though they will need a few modifications to fit the art style i am going for. As for the characters, i have a player character, guard character, and a 3rd character so far. In general, these are the main 3 that i will need hopefully, but again, these assets are not fully developed yet as I am hoping to implement 8-way movement and not 4 for a better user experience. In addition, the player character asset will need to have some additions if i manage to implement "disguises" in time.

As for how player movement is going, i have only partially implemented the animation as i was focused on getting the base assets sorted. The player can move in all directions, but only the moving north animation currently works. This won't take too much longer to add though, and will only need to be done for 3 characters to start off with so it will be finished easily by the next development log.

In addition to this, i did also collect some player feedback, though because of the early state of the game it was very limited as to what feedback could actually be collected. The feedback collected more or less was just focused on the fact that the animations were not complete yet and that other aspects of the project were not in place so they didn't have a "world" to move around in. In general, they were happy with the movement controls and speed though, but I still need to do a fair amount more work so that i can collect proper feedback.

Overall, the development is slow and I have experienced some setbacks, but I still think i should be able to implement the majority of the features for this in time, though it will likely be more of a demo with only the introductory part of the story due to the time constraints. Below is one of the player models that i have made for this game.

*note that the current sprite-sheet for this is currently missing the last 2 frames, this will be fixed by next devlog.
